TURNER — The Casco Bay Tummlers will bring its varied repertoire, ranging from original music to traditional dances and songs of the Yiddish theater and Jewish ghetto, to the community gazebo on Tuesday, June 19.

The free 6:30 p.m. concert is part of the “Music for Mavis” summer concert series held at the gazebo across from the Turner Public Library on Route 117.  Donations will be accepted.

Based in Portland, the Tummlers have been performing klezmer music since 1988. Steve Gruverman brings an extensive background in ethnic dance music to his soulful clarinet playing. Carl Dimow has developed a unique klezmer flute style; Julie Goell has a rich background in theater and jazz that comes out in her bass playing and vocals; Nancy 3. brings a playfulness to her accordion playing and singing; and Phil McGowan adds elements of jazz and improvisation to his traditional role as drummer.

The Tummlers have released three recordings and were featured on L.L. Bean’s holiday CD.  They also have a dramatic side, creating and performing music for the premiere of “Manifest” at the Portland Stage Company and for a whimsical Belgian documentary, “Mon noM.”

The group has toured in Germany, performing to sold-out houses at the Hackesches Hof Theater in Berlin and at the ninth annual Festival of Jewish Culture in Chemnitz. It was the first klezmer band to perform at the international Folklore Festival Skamba Skamba Kankliai in Vilnius, Lithuania.

More recently, the Tummlers toured Slovenia and Italy, where they busked in Venice before performing as one of the featured ensembles at the Festival Ande, Bali e Cante in Rovigo.
