NORWAY — Elizabeth “Betty” F. Cudmore Brewer, 91, passed away, Monday, June 18, at the Norway Rehabilitation and Living Center.
She was born in Salem, Mass., May 7, 1921, the daughter of the late Lawrence J. and Bertha (Burkinshaw) Cudmore. Betty grew up in the Beverly-Salem area of Massachusetts, and graduated from Beverly High, where she met her future husband, Lawrence R. Brewer.
During World War II, she worked as an acetylene torch welder in Denver, Colo., while Lawrence was in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After the war, while raising three children, she became a dressmaker, Brownie Scout Troop leader and den mother for the Cub Scouts. After moving to Maine, Betty enjoyed hunting the Maine woods to try to outshine her husband’s hunting and she even shot a few deer.
She joined the Firemen’s Auxiliary in South Paris, serving as president. She also was an organizer for “OSCO,” a nonprofit craft outlet where senior citizens could sell their crafts, one of her many interests. After her children were grown, Betty tried her hand at golf and in her 60s got a “hole in one” at Paris Hill Country Club. At a tournament open to only grandmothers, Betty also won the “Dandy Granny” rocking chair for which she was very proud.
Betty spent many years accumulating data for her genealogy book and made many trips to Boston to search the archives. She had 30 hard covered books made up for her family and local libraries. As a personal note ,Betty had written in her book that while she had lived a very ordinary life, the greatest thing to have happened was to be blessed with three lovely children and their children thereafter.
She is survived by her daughters, Janice E. Clausen of Chesapeake, Va., and Sharon E. MacDonald and her husband, Daniel, of Gray; daughter-in-law, Lucille Brewer of Manassas, Va.; brother, Thomas Cudmore and wife, Thelma, of Alfred; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; and many nephews; and a niece.
She was predeceased by her husband (affectionately called “Tuffy”) in 2000; and son, Lawrence R. Brewer Jr. in 1999.
The family would like to thank Dr. Laura Jett and the Norway Rehabilitation and Living Center staff for their wonderful and attentive care during her stay there.
