LEWISTON — The Maine Public Broadcasting Network will air the award-winning documentary “There Ought to Be A Law” as part of its series of Maine-made films.

“There Ought to Be A Law” follows a Lewiston woman, Cathy Crowley, in her effort to get the Maine Legislature to pass a law requiring a waiting period for young people purchasing firearms.

MPBN will air the documentary at 10 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, and at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 23.

Crowley, a self-described “average Mom” with no political experience, was  prompted to act after her 18-year-old son bought a gun at Walmart and killed himself. The film follows the waiting period bill as it makes its way through the legislature and shows how lobbying works — on both sides of the controversial issue.

The film’s producers, Geoffrey Leighton, Anita Clearfield and Shoshana Hoose, received the Maine Film Academy’s Groundbreaking Activist Leadership Award for their work on the documentary. The film also received a competitive distribution grant from the Paul Robeson Fund in New York City and a Maine Community Foundation Grant.

“There Ought to Be A Law” has been screened at colleges, theaters and on the Liberty Television network across the country. It has won numerous film festival awards.
