FARMINGTON — Registrations for the fourth annual Fishing Derby for Adults with Developmental Disabilities are now being taken through Monday, June 25.

The Recreation Department, in conjunction with their sponsor Coca-Cola Bottling of Farmington, offers this opportunity free of charge.

The derby will take place at Rollo Pond in the University of Maine at Farmington’s Abbott Park on Tuesday, July 3, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Anyone wishing to enter the derby must contact the Farmington Recreation Department office by calling 778-3464 by Monday.

Eligible participants are adults with developmental disabilities who will be accompanied by either a family member or supervisor from a local support agency. Agency supervisors may not exceed a ratio of three clients to one staff member.

Should the interest level for this event surpass 30 people, a lottery system will be used to assign who will begin to fish at the start of the derby and who will replace anyone who has caught their bag limit of one rainbow trout.

Four trophies will be awarded to lucky entrants for their various catch-weight and time-limit successes.

Callers can register using the Rec Department answering machine day or night. Callers should leave the participant’s name, telephone number, town of residence, agency affiliation (if any) and derby assistant’s name. A Recreation Department staff member will confirm the registration the following week.

There will be a sufficient number of casting spots marked out beforehand along Rollo Pond. If a fish is caught by a participant, that space will be vacated for another person to try their luck. Once a total of 30 fish are caught or one hour passes, whichever comes first, the derby will end.

The Recreation Department will not be able to furnish fishing equipment, however the Life Enrichment Advancing People program plans to provide a limited number of fishing poles to those who need one.

Due to the expected turnout, fly rods cannot be accommodated. Bait, such as worms, night crawlers or lures are the responsibility of participants.
