OQUOSSOC — Fly-tying classes using the Carrie G. Stevens method will be offered at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, at the Rangeley Outdoor Heritage Sporting Museum on Route 17.

Leslie Hilyard, who owns Rangeley Favorite Trout and Salmon Flies, will teach the classes. His business was founded by famed fly tier Carrie G. Stevens, Kevin Sinnett, director of the Rangeley Lakes Region Historical Society said in a news release recently by email.

“Hilyard and his father, Graydon Hilyard, were so captivated by the work and life of Mrs. Stevens that in 2000, they published ‘Carrie Stevens, Maker of the Rangeley Favorite Trout And Salmon Flies,'” Sinnett said.

Through this work, they chronicled the life and extensive streamer patterns of Stevens, the Rangeley region, and especially the area of Upper Dam where Maine guide Wallace Stevens and his wife, Carrie Stevens, plied their crafts, he said.

“Leslie often lectures on these subjects, as well as gives Stevens’ method tying-classes and demonstrations,” Sinnett said.

Hilyard’s classes on June 27 will focus on tying Carrie’s famous gray ghost streamer, he said.

Materials will be supplied, but participants can bring their own vises and equipment. Classes will take about three hours.

“Class sizes are limited to ensure maximum personal instruction,” Sinnett said.

Tiers with all levels of experience are welcome.

There is a suggested donation of $25 to the museum, which includes admission, he said.
