WILTON — “Follow the Reading Trail” will be the theme of the summer program at the Wilton Free Public Library from June 28-Aug. 2.

Children involved in this year’s program will set three reading goals for themselves and attend events associated with nature and the outdoors. The program opens on Thursday, June 28, with the Chewonki Foundation’s “Owls of Maine” program. It will be from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Cushing School gym.

Tuesday mornings will consist of a 10:30 a.m. story time at the library. Picture books will be read by community leaders including Rep. Tom Saviello; Heidi Wilcox, police chief; Lynne Hunter, librarian; Rhonda Irish, town manager; and local author Nancy Prince. Three of these story times will be ASL interpreted. Calendars with specific dates are available at the library.

On Tuesday, July 3 at 1 p.m., Donn Fendler, author of “Lost on A Mountain in Maine,” will visit the library to talk about his experiences as a young boy lost on Mt. Katahdin. He will also talk about his newest book, a graphic novel titled, “Lost Trail: Nine Days Alone in the Wilderness.” Both books will be on sale at the event.

Wednesday programming will typically consist of activities at Kineowatha Park. These will include nature craft activities with Cassie as well as a “Reading the Trail with GPS” activity put on by Community GIS. These activities at the park will begin at 3:30 p.m. The exception is Aug. 1 at 5:30 p.m. There will be a trail walk at North Jay White Granite Park with the Healthy Community Coalition. People who attend are welcome to bring a picnic supper that evening to eat at the end of the walk.

Thursday activities vary in times, so everyone is encouraged to pick up a calendar at the library. Activities include a trail walk at Kineowatha Park with the Healthy Community Coalition, fisheries biologist Dave Boucher, geocaching at Flint Woods in Farmington with the Healthy Community Coalition and a presentation about beavers by wildlife biologist Scott Lindsay.

On Fridays at 1 p.m. there will be craft times/workshops at the library. These will include an owl craft time with Mary Ryan of Everyone’s Resource Depot, a forestry workshop with Tom Saviello, and Russell Black who will talk about bees and the honey making process. There will also be a day to picnic and paint at Bass Park as well as make nature collages at the library.

The program will close on Thursday, Aug. 2, with a cookout at Kineowatha Park at 6 p.m. Hot dogs will be provided; those attending are asked to RSVP to Cassie at the library and bring their own drinks and a dish to share.

There will be prizes for those who meet reading goals, including vouchers for Dutch Treat at the end of the program. For more information, contact Cassie Savage at the library at 645-4831 or [email protected].
