FARMINGTON — The Farmington Recreation Department is currently taking registrations for its summer youth programs.

Programs starting in June include swimming lessons through the wading pool program and the Sumner P. Mills program. New this year, a program called Mommy and Me, is a time for 2-year-olds and mothers, fathers or caretakers to introduce the youngsters to the waters of the wading pool.

A Mountain Bike Challenge is offered for ages 12-17 on June 25 to 28 and the first session of Introduction to Golf for ages 9 to 12 begins on June 26. Another session starts July 17.

Martial arts for boys and girls are offered in a Youth Self Defense program for ages 7 to 12. It begins June 27.

In July, Futbol Boot Camp, a new advanced soccer camp is being offered. The camp is offered to students entering grades three through nine and takes place July 2, 3, 5 and 6.

Another fun July event, supervised fishing is offered July 3 for ages 6 to 10. Enrollment is limited to six first-time participants and 90 minutes of fishing at the University of Maine at Farmington’s Rollo Pond on July 3.

The first session of tennis for ages 7 to 12 begins on July 3 for three weeks. A second session begins on July 24.

Other new programs this summer include Lacrosse for ages 9 to 12 beginning July 9, and Play Ball for ages 5 to 8 begins on July 4. This program replaces the Paul Blauvelt Baseball Program. It is redesigned with different concepts and geared for only the youngest players.

A Backyard Sports Camp for students entering grades four, five and six begins July 10.  Recreational sports such as kickball, flag football, lacrosse, badminton, Frisbee golf, Wiffle ball and more will be added.

A Junior Volleyball Program for students entering grades seven to 12 begins July 10.

A preseason soccer camp for students entering grades one to six begins Aug. 6.

The department office at the Community Center on Middle Street is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
