LEWISTON — Many Lewiston-Auburn-area residents and workers participated in the first “One Day in L/A” project Saturday by taking photos of themselves, their loved ones, pets and scenery.

“So far, so good,” said organizer Kerry Landry, co-owner of Captive Elements Art House, which was sponsoring the project.

To promote the everyday beauty that too often is taken for granted, Captive Elements invited anyone who lives or works in the Lewiston-Auburn area to send in photographs in a 24-hour period, from midnight Friday to midnight Saturday.

When Landry woke up and checked the submitted photos, more than 30 had been sent. By 4 p.m., there were more than 200. “I wasn’t sure what to expect, whether we’d have zero or 100,” he said. “A few people said they’re doing video.”

Some photos will be chosen from among those submitted Saturday for a special exhibit to be displayed during the Sept. 28 Art Walk Lewiston Auburn. The exhibit will run through November, Landry said.

He released two photos that were sent in Saturday: a girl, Isabella St. Onge, posed with a backdrop of Lewiston buildings and a man and a dog.

“There’s been a strong contingent of pets, mostly dogs,” Landry said. “We love our pets.”

The “One Day in L/A” project was inspired by a documentary, “Life in a Day: The Story of a Single Day on Earth,” created by National Geographic and YouTube, from submitted video in July 2010.
