Flagpoles on various buildings in downtown Lewiston were designed to carry the American flag. I am certain that the original owners of those buildings did exactly that by flying the American flag on their flagpoles.

As time has passed, those flagpoles stand empty of a flag. Most of the buildings with empty flagpoles can be seen as you come into downtown Lewiston on Route 196 and also from the top of Goff Hill in Auburn. It is not a very good image for Lewiston, especially with the world in great turmoil with those who burn the American flag every chance they get, and even worse for our troops fighting overseas.

The empty flagpoles do not set a good example for immigrants and others who are now in the U.S. and Maine.

I am amazed that local veterans’ organizations haven’t raised the issue at their local meetings. All of those buildings in question haven’t flown a flag on their flagpoles for many years.

The American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars award certificates for flag display on flagpoles. Several building owners have received those awards in the past.

People should check out the downtown buildings on their daily travels and voice their opinions.
