Humane Society changes hours

LEWISTON — The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society has changed its shelter hours to better serve the public and the animals which they care for.

The shelter will be open daily and the new operating hours are Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Acoustic Sunset at Hacker’s Hill

CASCO — Join Loon Echo Land Trust for an Acoustic Sunset at Hacker’s Hill from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 12.

The Swampdonkeys will perform a one-hour set of acoustic music on top of Hacker’s Hill while the sun sets beyond the White Mountains. Donation of $10 per person, $5 for children, will benefit the ongoing fundraising for Hacker’s Hill. Refreshments will be served. Rain date is July 13.

The gate at the bottom of the hill will open at 7 p.m. Music will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will end at sunset at 8:30.

Parking is available at the top of the hill and the open area allows for comfortable walking with wonderful views of the Lakes Region and White Mountains. For more information contact Loon Echo at 647-4352 or info@lelt.org.

Vacation Bible School July 16

NEW GLOUCESTER — Again this year, the New Gloucester Bible Church, Route 100, is offering Vacation Bible School, with a theme of “Surf’n God’s Word in Search of Truth,” from 9 a.m. to noon July 16-20.

For ages 4 through 12, activities will include arts and crafts, fun and games, gymnastics, a penny contest, snacks and songs, and great Bible lessons, all at no charge. Call Pastor Dan at 926-3140 or just come.

‘Moon Mangoes’ story, signing

AUBURN — The Auburn Public Library will host a special story program and book signing with Lindy Shapiro, author of “Moon Mangoes,” at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 18.

Shapiro is an award-winning author and educator who’s been sharing stories with children for many years. In 2006, she founded Bodhi Education Project, a nonprofit that promotes awareness of the human experience and understanding of cultures, allowing people to connect with their world and, in turn, share responsibility in taking care of it. Shapiro lives on Maui with her husband, their two children, their dog Clementine and a chameleon named Pua’a.

Books will be available for sale and signing with 20 percent of all profits supporting the Auburn Public Library.

Social Security assistance

AUBURN —  Social Security Administration representatives will be available to answer questions about social security benefits from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, July 19, at Auburn Public Library.

Representatives will show how to use www.socialsecurity.gov and avoid unneeded trips to a Social Security office. They will also show how to estimate retirement benefits; apply online for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits; apply for extra help with Medicare prescription drug costs; submit a change of address or phone number; start or change direct deposit; request a proof of income letter and replace a lost Medicare card.

Train to help home care patients

LEWISTON — In response to increasing needs, Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice is seeking individuals who are interested in volunteering to help home care patients and their families. Volunteer opportunities include visiting, grocery shopping, transportation, office and Hospice House greeters.

The training classes will focus on volunteer opportunities that support patients receiving home care services as they recover from illness, surgery or a new medical condition, according to Kathy Baillargeon, volunteer supervisor.

The training class will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, July 19, at Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, 15 Strawberry Ave.

Hawaiian luau supper July 21

RAYMOND — The third annual Raymond Village Community Church Hawaiian Luau community supper will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at the church, Main Street.

Menu includes roast pork, sweet and sour chicken on rice, green beans, carrot salad, pasta salad, tropical fruit and desserts. Cost is $8, $5 for kids. Take out orders welcome.

DAR members plan annual luncheon

SABATTUS — The Burnt Meadow Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution successfully completed their mission to honor the graves of their Sisters in June.

The group will continue to celebrate the Fourth of July with their annual “Girls Day Out” Luncheon on General Knox Day, July 21.

Members will gather at a surprise location at 11:30 to share lunch and summer joys. Call Regent at 375-2698 Wednesday evening for location if interested.
