Bladesmith Symposium, show

AUBURN — New England School of Metalwork will host the fourth annual American Bladesmith Society Symposium July 13-15, at 7 Albiston Way.

NESM is one of only three approved Amrican Bladesmith Society training facilities and master bladesmiths from all over the U.S. will be demonstrating their skills.

There will be hands-on knife forging, a free to the public knife show, auction and refreshments. The cost for attending the entire event is $65. Attendees can register on site or at www.americanbladesmith.com.

There will be a free knife show on Saturday, July 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. 

Farmers Market changes hours

WAYNE — The hours for the Wayne Farmers’ Market have changed. The market, held in the village by the Mill Pond, will now take place Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

For BLTs, take home locally made and grown bread, bacon, lettuce and tomato from the vendors. Also in season are blueberries, raspberries and summer vegetables.

The market also hosts an open mike most weeks. Musicians wanting to play should contact Stan at standavis@yahoo.com.

Composting workshop July 18

LEWISTON — A composting workshop will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at the St.Mary’s Nutrition Center, 208 Bates St.

Learn how to recycle garden and kitchen scraps into nutrients for your garden.

Future workshops will be on building a composting worm bin on Aug. 22 and seed-saving on Sept. 12.

DAR members plan luncheon

SABATTUS — The Burnt Meadow Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution successfully completed their mission to honor the graves of their Sisters in June.

The group will continue to celebrate the Fourth of July with their annual “Girls Day Out” Luncheon on General Knox Day, July 21.

Members will gather at a surprise location at 11:30 to share lunch and summer joys. Call Regent at 375-2698 Wednesday evening for location if interested.

Shakers part of Open Farm Day

NEW GLOUCESTER — Open Farm Day, part of a statewide celebration of Maine agriculture at more than 100 farms, will be held on Sunday, July 22 at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, Route 26, from noon to 4 p.m. The village is open free of charge.

Activities at the village include wagon rides, barn tours, Scottish Highland cattle, sheep, beekeeping, museum tours, food and plant sale, angora rabbits, woodcarvers, barbecue meals and gift shops.

Reading program for all ages

LEWISTON — Bates College Summer Programs and Events will offer eight different reading skills programs for age 4 through adults. Tuition and materials fees vary by program level.

Programs begin the week of July 23 on the Bates College campus and in Lewiston.

Reading programs for younger students build comprehension and students learn the phonics and fluency skills they need to become strong readers. Programs for older students and adults are geared toward improving comprehension and study skills, vocabulary and speed reading. The skills taught in the classes reinforce the importance of reading for pleasure and developing a lifelong love of books.

The programs are offered as a community service by Bates College Summer Programs and Events. The programs are taught by instructors from the Institute of Reading Development.
