JAY — RSU 73 directors voted 10-1 Thursday to award a one-year contract for snow plowing, removal and sanding to Jean Castonguay Logging & Excavation Inc. for the price of $85,000.

Jay Director Darcie Comstock opposed the motion.

The Livermore Falls based company had the contract last year at the same price.
One other bid came in but it was just for the schools in Livermore and Livermore Falls.

It was asked why one contractor couldn’t do one area of schools and another do another area of schools.

The district couldn’t award just one campus and not the other, Superintendent Robert Wall said. It needs a contractor to do all the school property including the Cedar Street Learning Center in Livermore Falls, he said.

Prior to consolidation, it cost RSU 36 about $23,000 to have their schools done, Chairwoman Denise Rodzen of Livermore Falls said.

The town of Jay did the Jay schools because at the time the Jay school system was part of the town. It was difficult for the town to break out how much it cost just for that service, Wall said.

The board also voted to award Archie’s Inc. of Mexico, a one-year contract for trash and recycling services at a price of $32,428.56.

The cost of trash removal is $28,746 and the cost of recycling is $3,682.56.

The contract price stayed the same as last year, according to the Sun Journal archives.

In another matter, directors voted unanimously to approve the superintendent’s recommendation to keep food service prices the same as last year.

Rodzen said she was glad to hear that they could stay the same since there was such a jump in price last year.

That means the cost of breakfast at the Jay and Livermore elementary schools for students will be 75 cents for those who pay full price, and 30 cents for those who are eligible for the reduced price.

Lunch prices at the elementary schools will remain at $1.80 for full-price and 40 cents for reduced.

Breakfast prices at the Spruce Mountain Middle School will be  $1 for full-price and 30 cents for reduced price. Lunches will cost $1.80 for full-price and 40 cents for reduced.

At both high school campuses the cost of breakfast will be $1 for full-price and 40 cents for reduced. Lunch prices will be $2 for full-price and 40 cents for reduced.

An adult breakfast price is $2 and an adult lunch is $3.50.

Rodzen said that Wall plans to make sure that parents or guardians are aware of the guidelines for free and reduced lunches so that those who are eligible sign up instead of not eating.

In other business, the board also voted to have administrative and supervisor reports given at one board meeting a month rather than two. It will be the first meeting of the month. Administrators will also be excused from delivering a report the first meeting of August.

The board also appointed Kristina Emond to the position of summer GED teacher for the adult education program for a total of 60 hours that began on June 9. They also appointed Greg Bizier to the position of program support for the adult education program as of July 9 contingent on proper certification and Maine Department of Education fingerprint status.

Directors also accepted the superintendent’s recommendation for members and the chairperson of the Professional Growth and Staff Development Committee for 2012-13. Members are Chairwoman Donna Labbe, her sister, Terry Leclerc, their sister-in-law, Janet Ventrella, Susan St. Pierre and Susan Hastings.
