KINGFIELD — This year’s four-day Kingfield Festival Days is packed with non-stop events, competitions and entertainment.
One new musical offering features BoomBangTwang, Maine’s only soul-stirring, swamp rock, funkabilly band. The trio performs onstage from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, presenting an unique mix of music, off-beat humor and Christian themes.
“We pick to beat the devil with that rhythmic sound you hear when the old car is running low on oil,” said Doug “Twang” Nye, the group’s guitar player and songwriter.
Each day includes all-ages activities and plenty of good food, according to festival organizer Myra Coffin. The Kingfield Historical Society, Ski Museum and Stanley Museum will be open several hours each day. The rock climbing wall, bounce castle, and children’s activities are located within a short walking distance in the village center.
“Most everything is free but the food,” Coffin said. “Each year, we hold fundraisers, and we also have several generous sponsors to thank.”
Thursday starts with an afternoon amateur photo contest, a cook-off, and the beginning of the four-day Amazing Race, which will challenge teams to a series of quests.
The evening ends with live music beneath the tent on Depot Street.
Friday activities include a display of flower arrangements and quilts at the Baptist Church. The crowning of Mrs. Kingfield at 6 p.m. will be followed by an ice cream social. Saturday begins with a pet parade at 9 a.m., a bike and doll carriage parade at 10 a.m., and a noontime Grand Parade down Main Street.
Local organizations will host barbecues, and Webster Library will have a used book sale. A pudding and pie-eating contest will be held at 3 p.m. beneath the tent, and the Whatever Floats parade will meander from the Lord’s Bridge to the Centennial Bridge dam.
On Sunday, competitions include a 5K walk/run, truck pulls, and the mud football playoffs and championship game. Alison Thayer, owner of Peak Performance gym, also is a personal trainer and helps people who are serious about losing weight, improving their general health, and understanding how to keep the weight off.
“Everyone will have a different reason to enter this 5K event, but this could be a life-changer for anyone ready to get into shape,” she said. “I encourage people to get a few friend and family members together and make it even more fun.”
