BRIDGTON — The Bridgton SummerFest 2012 will take place July 20-22 as a fundraiser for the Bridgton Community Center. Events will include:

Friday, July 20: 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., Kavanaugh Amusements-Midway Rides and mechanical bull rides; Sunset, ReMax hot air balloon rides; All day: speed pitching Bridgton baseball, C.H.O.I.C.E.S. dunk tank, U.S. Army climbing rock wall with H3 Hummer.

Saturday, July 21: Sunrise, Remax hot air balloon rides; 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., Kavanaugh Amusements-Midway Rides; 1 p.m., pig roast; 2 p.m., Maine Obsolete Auto League Parade; All day: speed pitching Bridgton baseball, C.H.O.I.C.E.S. dunk tank, U.S. Army climbing wall; 5 to 11 p.m. street dance featuring Wrong Road, Smokin Loafers, Rockin’ Recons, Sound man, John Huntress, Bluejay Light and Sound; “Hugs” the clown will be there in the evening.

Sunday, July 22: 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., Kavanaugh Amusements-Midway Rides; All day: speed pitching Bridgton baseball, C.H.O.I.C.E.S. dunk tank; 2 p.m. Western Maine dance demonstration, Bridgton Community Band.

Fair adds steer, oxen pulls

WATERFORD — For the first time ever the Waterford World’s Fair Association will host a Canadian Steer and Oxen Pull Saturday, July 21. This event will start immediately following the pig scramble for 7- and 8-year-olds, which will be held at 5 p.m. in the pulling ring.

The Canadian steer and Oxen pull is much different from the way the United States does theirs. First they make one lane down the middle of the pulling ring and the two animals must stay between these lines. Then the animals are hooked onto the drag and the driver tells the crew how much weight he wants on the drag, then the team must move the drag at least three feet. This continues until the animals can not move the drag. This is also a timed event.

Maine-ly Harmony yard sale

PALERMO —  Maine-ly Harmony women’s a cappella barbershop chorus will hold its annual super yard sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at Hill Gardens, Route 3.

The sale will feature the goods from 30 households. Plants, books and unexpected treasures await the bargain-hunter. Barbershop harmony will again fill the air and the Harmony Cafe will be serving hot dogs, home-baked goods and beverages.

Maine-ly Harmony is a nonprofit organization that rehearses Wednesday evenings at Togus VA and regularly does benefit performances throughout the community. For more information on the yard sale, becoming a member or booking a performance, call Donna at 582-5523 or Linda at 993-2246.

Reverse disease naturally

OXFORD — An educational seminar that teaches how to escape and reverse disease naturally will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 22, at the Oxford Seventh-Day Adventist community building, 256 Fore St.

Presentations by Dr. John Clark will provide knowledge of natural health, based on scientific evidence, clinical and personal experience. There will be time for questions and answers. There will also be food demonstrations with recipes and samples.

‘Heroes’ theme at VBS

SUMNER — The Congregational Church of East Sumner will hold Vacation Bible School for area youth K-six the week of July 23-27 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The theme for the week is “Heroes of the Faith.” The Spotsylvania, Va., Presbyterian Church will be sending 16 members of their youth group to help with teaching, singing, crafts and games.

Besides VBS, the youth group and older youth from the Congregational Church will assist local homeowners with yard work and home improvement projects.

Casserole, bean supper

FRYEBURG — A bean and casserole supper will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, at Fryeburg New Church, 12 Oxford St. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children.

A concert by Jon Sarty will take place at 7 p.m. at Bradley Park.

Gluten Free Tuesdays

NORWAY —  Fare Share Co-op has announced Gluten Free Tuesdays, a new service beginning July 24 for those who are gluten intolerant or would generally like to learn more about going gluten free.

Every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon, customers can meet with Suzanne Dunham to discuss the issues of being gluten intolerant and the steps to going gluten free. This is a free service offered by Fare Share and Dunham, who has been giving Living Gluten Free seminars and cooking classes since 2005 in a variety of venues. Dunham is also gluten intolerant and has focused her herbal expertise in the area of digestion and related autoimmune issues.

Author’s night at library

WATERFORD — Linda Kilburn will give a presentation on “Tomes to ‘Toons: A Writer’s Continuing Evolution” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, at the Waterford Library.

Kilburn, a graduate of Wellesley College and the Boston University School of Social Work, is a writer of highly varied range. From huge professional tomes to enhance her practice in health care strategic planning, practice and teaching, to a book written after the tragic death of her daughter, to writing community shows and song lyrics, to poetry commemorating special events, she has most recently turned her hand to helping a disabled author by doing cartoon illustrations for her children’s book.

This is the first of a series of presentations by local authors at the library. The next program in the series on Aug. 8 will feature Peter Leslie discussing his book, “Aviation’s Quiet Pioneer: Pan American Flying Boats” about John Leslie, Pan Am’s first aeronautical engineer.

Library puppet show

WATERFORD — On Thursday, July 26, at 3:30 p.m., the Waterford Library will sponsor The Treetop Collector’s Club, a performance for kids by the MudEye Puppet Company of Massachusetts. The performance will be at the Wilkins House on Plummer Hill Road.

Follow the adventures of Vel-Crow as he bravely searches for his lost friend, Hazel, the Kanga-Raccoon. On his journey, the hero meets Land-Phil, a misunderstood character who teaches Vel-Crow an important lesson about friendship and what to do with our waste.

The show includes a “meet and greet,” where kids are encouraged to see the puppets up close and learn how they are made. All puppets are made from recycled materials, like cardboard and bike tubes. There is no admission charge, but donations to support the library will be gratefully accepted.

Motorcycle ride benefits vets

LEWISTON — The Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, Chapter 17-1, will hold a fundraising ride Saturday, July 28, to benefit veterans who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The proceeds will help pay for veterans and their families to attend Camp Kiev on Damariscotta Lake in Nobleboro, where veterans and their families can relax and enjoy indoor and outdoor activities free of charge. This is the second year of the program at the camp, which is also known as Camp Wabis.

The association-sponsored ride will begin at 10:30 a.m. at L-A Harley-Davidson, 839 Main St., and end nearly 40 miles later at Camp Kiev. Anyone interested in participating is welcome. The cost is $20 for motorcycle and driver and $10 for passengers.
