LEWISTON — A Greene man was injured Wednesday when his Jeep rolled over on Sabattus Street, but a pair of witnesses rescued his dog that was flung from the vehicle.
Police said John Russo was driving toward Lewiston when he lost control of his vehicle and it struck a utility pole and flipped onto its side.
The Jeep, a convertible, had no roof when it rolled. The small dog riding with Russo was thrown out, witnesses said.
A pair of women who had been driving behind the Jeep corralled the dog, believed to be a Shih Tzu, and hung on to it while waiting for help to arrive.
Russo remained conscious but sustained bumps and bruises, police said. He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center where he was still being treated later in the day.
The Jeep crashed near Stone Ledge Drive, a dead-end street a quarter mile from Pond Road. The 4 p.m. wreck forced police to shut down a section of the street while emergency crews responded.
The dog appeared unhurt and remained calmly in the arms of the woman who rescued it until Animal Control Officer Wendell Strout arrived to take it to the shelter.
The cause of the crash remained under investigation.
