Aubuchon helping kids

LEWISTON – From July 30 through Sept. 3, Aubuchon Hardware customers throughout the state can help fight childhood cancers by giving $1 to the Jimmy Fund through the A Chance for Kids program. The hardware store chain’s goal is to raise more than $50,000 for pediatric cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

With each contribution, customers will receive a promotion card guaranteed to be a winner with prizes ranging from all-inclusive resort vacations, airline tickets, theme park admissions and merchandise discounts at Aubuchon Hardware, Olympia Sports and on Burger King food.

This is Aubuchon Hardware’s first year of participating. Stores in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York and Connecticut will be part of this year’s program. Also participating are Burger King restaurants and Olympia Sports.

Reunion for Hansons, Knockwoods, Chandbournes

SALEM — The annual Hanson/Chandbourne/Knockwood Reunion will be held Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Camp of William and Joan Nemi. Everyone is asked to bring something for the food table.

This year there will be a Chinese auction. Bring something to pass on, old, new or homemade, and put it in a gift bag or paper bag.

Activities for blind students

AUBURN — BETA Program Activities Day for Blind Students will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, for students from 8 to 28, at the Fireside Inn, Washington Street, right off the Auburn exit of the turnpike.

Cookies for veterans

AUGUSTA — On June 11, the Maine VA Health Care System hosted a get-together with Girl Scouts and some of the veterans who reside at the Togus Community Living Center.

“This event celebrates the efforts of Girl Scouts statewide, as well as the generosity of the general public,” said France Shea, communications manager for Girl Scouts of Maine. “During the 2012 Girl Scout Cookie Sale, Maine citizens purchased 1,168 cases — that’s 13,944 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies — and donated them to the men and women in our state who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.”

Cookies were donated to veterans at the Togus Veterans Administration Medical Center and at community based clinics and veterans centers statewide.

Blues Dogz to perform

YARMOUTH — On Thursday, Aug. 9, at 6 p.m., North Yarmouth Events Committee will present Summer at the Band Stand 2012 with special musical guests The Blues Dogz at the Village Green, Route 115, North Yarmouth.

The event starts with a potluck cookout. Bring a side dish to share; barbecues will be provided for anyone to grill a burger or dog.

The second annual dessert contest will also be held. Bring entries by 6:30 p.m. for registration.
