The Lewiston-Auburn Duplicate Bridge Club winners on July 24 were: first, Tom Dahlberg and Mike True; second, Fred Letourneau and David Lock; third, Luke Merry and Mike Quinn; fourth, Jan Arey and Linda Leotsakos.

First in B, Larry Fortier and Roger Labbe; second, Nick Karaessinis and Bailey Geeslin.

The winners at Schooner Estates on July 25 were: first, Rosemarie Goodwin and Mike True; second, Sherry Hinckley and Fred Letourneau; third, Leslie Lord and David Lock.

American Legion to meet

LEWISTON — American Legion Post 210 holds a monthly meeting the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Elk’s Lodge. The next meeting is on Wednesday, Aug. 8. Contact Adjutant Chris Rushton at 754-8014 with any questions.

Connections with Japan

LISBON FALLS —  On Aug. 8, the Lisbon Historical Society will host guest speaker, Merton Ricker, a Lisbon native, member of the Lisbon Historical Society and former teacher in Maine and Japan.

Ricker will discuss the historical connections with Japan and how it began with the 1889 shipwreck of the Bath-built ship, The Cheseborough, off the coast of Shariki, Japan, where local Japanese residents rescued and cared for the Maine sailors who were on board.

Assisting Ricker with the presentation will be Vera King of Bath, director of the Japan-America Society of Maine, and Richard and Joyce Devito of Georgetown, collectors of Japanese items. Maine has many connections with Japan, such as sister-cities, exchange students, historical relationships and Japanese gardens at Bowdoin College.

The presentation will include Japanese culture, hot spring resorts, holidays, wedding customs and many photos. A collection of items brought back from Japan will be on display. There will be a question-and-answer period, followed by refreshments.

Elvis tribute at Lisbon VFW

LISBON — By popular demand, “Elvis” is coming back to town. Robert Lewis, a veteran Elvis tribute artist, will be performing at the Raymond J. Lavigne VFW Post 9459 at 52 Lisbon St., on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 8 to 11 p.m.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. The cost of the ticket includes a buffet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will also be door prizes and raffles. Tickets are available by calling the post home, Wednesday through Friday, 2 to 7 p.m. at 353-5291. Because space is limited, only 120 tickets are available.

Ricker Library yard sale

POLAND — The Friends of Ricker Memorial Library, 1211 Maine St., will hold their annual yard sale from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11. There will be all kinds of treasures, rummage, books, household items, odds and ends and a few new items. There will also be a grilled hot dog lunch to enjoy while shopping.

All proceeds will benefit the family movie night’s purchase of a new movie screen. For more information about securing a table or donating items, call the library at 998-4390. Rain date, Sunday, Aug. 12.

Vacation Bible School in Leeds

LEEDS — Leeds Community Church will hold a Vacation Bible School with the theme “Celebrate God’s Word,” from 8:30 a.m. to noon Monday, Aug. 13, through Friday, Aug. 17.

Through lessons, music, crafts, games and other activities, participants will celebrate and learn about some of the many things in the Bible. They will learn about caring for God’s earth by reducing waste, reusing whatever can be reused, as well as recycling and composting.

A healthy breakfast snack will be available upon arrival at 8:30 a.m. and another healthy snack will be provided later each morning.

All are welcome. This program is aimed at children kindergarten through sixth grade. Children younger than kindergarten age would need to be accompanied by an adult who would stay with them during the whole session.
