AUBURN — Repairs to a sinkhole discovered in June will detour Auburn Mall traffic Wednesday.
Public Works Operations Manager Gary Wadsworth said crews would close Turner Street north of the Auburn Mall roundabout at 7 a.m. Wednesday. He expects work to wrap up and the road to reopen by 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The work will take place at the western entrance to the mall, near the TD Banknorth call center.
Traffic heading north on Turner Street will be detoured at the roundabout and around the outside of the Auburn Mall. Southbound mall traffic will be detoured onto Kings Road.
“There isn’t really a great detour,” Wadsworth said. “People will have to filter their way through the mall parking lot. It’s kind of difficult to set up.”
Wadsworth said he suspects a leaking storm drain caused the sinkhole.
“It’s a city, separated storm-water pipe that seems to have a break in it,” he said. “But there are a couple of utility lines that cross over it and we are thinking they might have broken the pipe. But until we dig it up, we’ll never know for sure.”
