As my husband and I (with a combined total of more than 75 years of teaching experience) sit here reading the Sun Journal online, we were pleased that the July 27 editorial hit the nail on the head. How refreshing to acknowledge the need for a better school-related work ethic by both parents and students.

Lack of accountability for students is nearly as important as accountability for educators.

There are some wonderful dedicated, motivated students, but, unfortunately, they are not the majority anymore.

Saying “no” was difficult when we were raising our children and I’m grateful that there weren’t as many video games, but the television went off and the media influence was much less than today.

Self-motivation is a rare quality in a young person. Parents need to facilitate it. We need to help our young people with a model of hard work to accomplish greater gains. Success and greater self-esteem will follow.
