FARMINGTON — It was on Aug. 17, 1911, that world-renowned opera diva and Farmington native Lillian Nordica performed her final concert in Nordica Auditorium. In remembrance and celebration of that event, the Nordica Memorial Association each year presents a Nordica Day concert, featuring a young and up-and-coming opera singer from Maine.

This year, that singer is soprano Jazmin DeRice of Windham.

DeRice’s program at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, will feature music by Bach, Brahms, Mozart, Barber, Massanet, de Falla and Mahler. She will be accompanied by pianist Derek Hertzer, also a graduate student at USM.

DeRice holds a degree in vocal performance from the University of Southern Maine, where she is now in her second year of graduate study.

DeRice has been involved with PortOpera productions for the last four years. She recently appeared in lead roles in USM’s productions of “Gianni Schicchi” and “Suor Angelica.” She is involved in a production of “Hansel and Gretel” for VOX Maine in collaboration with Paperbull Puppets.

The concert will begin at 7:30 in Nordica Auditorium at Merrill Hall on the University of Maine at Farmington campus. Admission is free, though donations are accepted.  A reception will follow the concert. For more information, call 778-2042.
