The homeowners, Robert Boole and his wife, awoke to the smell of smoke at 2:20 a.m. and were able to safely leave their home and call 911, according to town manager George Finch.
Firefighters arrived at the scene and discovered the large barn and ell fully involved, with flames spreading to the home, Finch said. He added that firefighters concentrated their effort to protecting the main residence.
While the barn was destroyed, damage to the home was contained to the attic and the walls of the second floor, Finch said.
According to Finch, because of the rural location, firefighters from several communities helped Harrison Fire and Rescue transport water to the scene by tankers. WMTW-TV reported that the nearest hydrant was 1½ miles from the scene.
No injuries were reported.
Fire officials said they believe lightning struck the barn and touched off the blaze. Strong storms moved through the area overnight.
Crews were still at the scene at 7 a.m. completing overhaul and salvage.
