NORWAY — Major roadwork is expected to get under way in Norway, shortly after the Board of Selectmen awarded the bid to a York County contractor.

F.R. Carroll of Limerick was awarded the bid for $371,695 on Thursday for work ranging from overlays to reclamation and base paving and full-depth reconstruction of half-a-dozen streets both in town and in the outlying areas of Norway.

Although the company is based in York County, the board and Town Manager David Holt said the company was the best choice based on its low bid and and the need to get the project going.

“It seemed to be the right thing to do,” Holt said.

F.R. Carrroll outbid three other companies, including the White Brothers, who bid $390,229; Bruce A. Manzer with a bid of $398,851 and Pike Industries, which bid $399,325.

The work will include overlays on Town Farm Road, Hemingway Road, Thurston Road, Greenwood Road and the Don Hunt Road for a total of $252,800; the reclamation and base paving on Emerson Road for $142,000 and full-depth reconstruction on Summer Street, which will go along with a sewer project on that street, at $80,000. Marion Avenue will also have some drainage and street repair work done at a cost of $29,000.

A small portion of the work will be done using leftover fiscal 2012 road funds, the rest will be paid for with fiscal 2013 funds approved by annual town meeting in June.

“It’s a good choice to get them moving,” Selectman Russ Newcomb said.
