LIVERMORE FALLS — More than an estimated $5,000 damage was done to the bottom floor of the Treat Memorial Public Library after a part that controls water flow broke on a toilet.
Library Director Elaine Smith said a trustee discovered a flood downstairs in the areas of the auditorium, kitchenette and book storage area a few weeks ago.
A part that controls the water flow into the water tank on the back of a toilet broke, she said Tuesday. The water streamed down the hallway and into the auditorium, she said.
There were 2 to 2½ inches of water in the auditorium, she said. “We lost the floor in the auditorium,” she said. “It had to be removed.”
Floor cabinets were destroyed in the kitchenette area. Part of the rug in the book storage area was soaked and had to be cleaned, Smith said.
Trim also was damaged downstairs, and it needs to be replaced, she said.
An insurance adjuster has inspected the damage, Smith said.
“Due to this happening I had to cancel the teen summer reading program and the younger summer reading program,” she said. “The auditorium is unusable.”
Verso Paper Corp. in Jay “graciously” allowed the library authorities the use of Murray Hall for the end-of-summer reading program celebration to be held Thursday, Smith said.
