LIVERMORE FALLS — The Spruce Mountain Buying Club and Cooperative does not have the financial support to open a proposed cafe and business incubator in a storefront at the Bank Building.

“We wish we had better news,” coordinator Robin Beck of Livermore Falls wrote in a press release. The steering committee and Beck will try again to move the project forward when the time is right, she said.

“We want to thank those who donated to the cooperative. We promise that your donations will be used within the cooperative for needed items,” Beck said.

In the meantime, the group will continue its effort to make the buying club grow. The group buys in bulk and passes on savings to members.

“The bigger we get, the more we can order and the more often you can get good local, organic, and ethnic foods from the area, Maine and New England,” she said.

Members will be able to use a credit card or debit card at their next grocery pickup, thanks to a grant from Western Mountains Alliance.

People can join the club for $25. If they join before September, they will not have a 10 percent service charge on any purchase in September. For more information on the program, go to www.SMBuyingClubandCoop.org.

The club buys from Associated Buyers, Crown of Maine, Maine Country Butter, Snafu Acres, Emery Farm, A Small Town Bakery, Pleasant View Farm and A Wrinkle in Thyme Farm. More farms are being added.
