NEW GLOUCESTER — The Machiah Center will inaugurate a monthly series of talks and ?lm screenings on Wednesday, Aug. 29, with a talk with authors Arlie and Adam Hochschild.

Al Brewer of WMPG Radio’s “Big Talk” will interview Adam about his work. John Baugher, associate professor of sociology at the University of Southern Maine, will talk with Arlie about her new book, “The Outsourced Self: Initimate Life in Market Times.”

Drawing on hundreds of interviews and original research, Arlie Hochschild follows the incursions of the market into every stage of intimate life. She reveals a world in which the most intuitive and emotional of human acts have become work for hire.

Examples range from dating services that train you to be the CEO of your love life to wedding planners who create a couple’s “personal narrative;” from nameologists (who help name your child) to wantologists (who help you set goals).

A sociologist at U.C. Berkeley, Arlie Hochschild’s books include “The Managed Heart,” “The Second Shift,” “The Time Bind” and “The Commercialization of Intimate Life.”

Adam Hochschild teaches writing at the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley. His books include “King Leopold’s Ghost,” “Bury the Chains” and “To End All Wars.”

The Machiah Center is a nonpro?t focusing on the humanities and social justice. The talk will be from 7 to 9 p.m. in the former Grange Hall. Suggested donation: $10.
