LEWISTON — After laying off 70 workers last month, Xerox announced Monday that it’s hiring up to 55 people for its call center here to handle unforeseen growth.

Spokeswoman Kelly O’Brien said the former Affiliated Computer Services had supported four clients. This spring, Xerox anticipated two of them moving their business and announced that the call center would lay off 181 people in July. Then only one business left. The other stayed and it and one other client are growing, she said.

“We are calling back people who lost their jobs to see” if they’re aware of the new openings and interested, O’Brien said.

The call center at 40 East Ave. answers in-bound calls. It employs 250 people.

O’Brien said the company is looking for customer care representatives ideally with call center experience and the ability to multi-task. Of the 55 positions, 15 could transition to work-from-home. Hiring has started and will continue until Sept. 7, according to a Xerox press release.

Xerox purchased ACS in 2009 and earlier this year began phasing out the ACS name.
