LISBON — The local Police Department is participating in the annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign now through the Labor Day holiday weekend.
The department is one of 40 Maine law enforcement agencies involved i the program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Locally, a total of 14 officers will conduct patrols during this period. As of Thursday, the department has conducted 15 special enforcement patrols resulting in six arrests.
A $5,000 grant from the Bureau of Highway Safety will pay for up to 150 hours of patrols. The Lisbon department has successfully participated in the national program for more than 10 years, Chief David Brooks said.
The annual crackdown involves more than 10,000 police departments and other law enforcement agencies across the nation who will redouble efforts during this period.
Coinciding with enforcement efforts in communities nationwide, NHTSA will air advertisements in major media markets across the country featuring “invisible” law enforcement officers observing alcohol-impaired individuals unseen before apprehending them when they attempt to drive their vehicles. The ads convey the message that its law enforcement officers are both omnipresent and vigilant in deterring drunken drivers. The ad theme and slogan will comprise the agency’s core drunk driving message from 2011 to 2016.
