St. Joe’s 3, USM 2
GORHAM — Down by two with 17 minutes remaining, Saint Joseph’s (1-0) netted three unanswered goals in a matter of seven minutes to tip University of Southern Maine (0-1), 3-2, in the first game of the USM Soccer Classic at Hannaford Field on Friday afternoon.
Junior forward Ross Suleski had a hand in all three goals, scoring the first two markers of the match and assisting on the game-winner, which was scored by freshman midfielder Ralph Houanche in the 81st minute.
The Huskies struck with an early goal in each half, as sophomore forward Mazen Aljari found the back of the net off a Michael Daniel feed at the 13:29 mark and Luke Pugsley tallied an unassisted marker just 52 seconds into the second stanza to push the Monks’deficit to two goals.
Women’s soccer
Gordon 2, USM 0
WENHAM, Mass. — Gordon College scored once in each half, posting a 2-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a women’s soccer match Friday night at the Brigham Athletic Complex. The match was the season-opening game for both squads.
Senior Karina Scavo paced the Fighting Scots with goal and an assist. Senior Caitlin Nedde had what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 12th minute of play. Junior goalie Kari Christensen, a Bonny Eagle grad, made two saves to earn the shutout.
Freshman goalkeeper Marissa Temple made 12 saves in her collegiate debut for Southern Maine.
