MONMOUTH — Russell Neal snatched the ball during scrum in front of the net, broke away and punched in the winning goal 23 minutes into the second half, giving Monmouth Academy a 2-1 victory over stubborn Mountain Valley in a boys’ soccer opener Saturday.

The Falcons scored first when Josh Rainey scored on an Andrew Phelps assist.

The Mustangs bounced right back when Kyle Fletcher scored on a Drew McFarren feed. McFarren and Sherman Spears turned in fine defensive performances for Monmouth.

The Mustangs outshot the Falcons, 10-8, and Monmouth goalie Kasey Smith earned the win, making five saves.

G-NG 3, Poland 1

POLAND — Will Bartlett scored an unassisted goal three minutes into the second half for the eventual game-winning goal as Gray-New Gloucester secured a 3-1 victory over Poland in boys’ soccer action Saturday.

The Patriots (1-0) posted the first goal on an unassisted tally from Josh Kane nearly six minutes into the contest. Tyler St.Pierre rounded out the scoring with an unassisted tally with six minutes remaining.

The Knights (0-1) evened the score at 1-1 just before the half on an unassisted goal from Shawn Mitchell.

Goalie Adam Verreault made five saves for Poland, while goalie Spencer Harriman turned back two to earn the win in net for Gray-New Gloucester.

Hall-Dale 6, Mt. Abram 1

SALEM — Zach McNaughton and Nat Crocker hit for two goals each and Colin Lush and Zach Plummer added one apiece as Hall-Dale opened the MVC soccer campaign with a 6-1 win over Mt. Abram on Saturday.

Courtland Talmage scored the lone goal for the Roadrunners (0-1), and Tristan Dyar stopped 15 of 21 shots in the loss.

Tyler Fitzgerald kept the cage for the Bulldogs (1-0), allowing one goal on three shots.

Girls’ soccer

Brunswick 4, Oxford Hills 0

PARIS — Junior Anna Cowan netted a pair of goals to lead Brunswick to a 4-0 shutout over Oxford Hills in girls’ soccer action Saturday.

The Dragons received offensive support from seniors Jena Libby and Paige Tetu. Each player scored a single goal in the winning effort.

Freshman goalie Samantha Bickford made 12 saves for the Vikings, while Haley Murano prevented five to earn the shutout victory in net for Brunswick.

Greenville 4, Rangeley 1

RANGELEY — Shelby Ward provided the eventual game-winning goal at 38:15 of the first half as Greenville produced a 4-1 win over Rangeley in girls’ soccer action Saturday.

Michaella Gilbert, Brooke Noyes and Lean Bilodeau contributed a goal apiece for the Greenville Lakers.

Abby Abbott converted the only goal of the game for the Rangeley Lakers on an assist from Jenny Abbott.

Rangeley led 1-0 on Abbott’s goal.

Goalie eighth grader Meg Target made 13 saves for Rangeley, while goalie Brooke Noyes stopped 10 to earn the win in net for Greenville.

Mt. Ararat 3, Lewiston 1

TOPSHAM — Three different Mt. Ararat players scored to spoil a 23-save effort from Lex Jimenez as Mt. Ararat topped Lewiston 3-1 in KVAC soccer action Saturday.

Chelsea Crawford, Libbey Ouellette and Christine Levesue all netted goals for the Eagles (1-0). Kyleigh Letourneau scored the lone goal for the Blue Devils (0-1).
