Youth event at church

PARIS — The First Congregational Church of South Paris is holding an open youth event for children age 5-12 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the church’s Haskell House. Parents, grandparents, older and younger siblings and friends of friends are encouraged to join in on the fun. All children, regardless of faith, are welcome to attend.

In celebration of the return to school and the church’s 200th anniversary, attendees will play “school yard games” typical of children’s recreation in New England in 1812. There will be hoop rolling relays, hopscotch, battledores, rope games, here we go round the mulberry bush, etc. Quieter games include jackstraws, checkers, dominoes and Bible-based tongue twisters and riddle games. All of the above were common forms of fun in 1812.

If able, bring a bag of chips, salad or side dish to share. All are welcome whether bringing something or not. Provided will be hot dogs, hamburgers, condiments and a beverage. Contact Cynthia Riley, youth services director, with questions at cynthiajriley@hotmail.com.
