DURHAM — The cause of a barn fire on Royalsborough Road on Monday morning remained undetermined Tuesday, fire Chief Bill St. Michel said.

Investigator Chris Stamford of the State Fire Marshal’s Office visited the scene Tuesday and concluded that due to the extent of the damage, the cause will remain undetermined, said Sgt. Joel Davis of the marshal’s office.

The fire was reported at around 2 a.m. Monday, and when firefighters arrived the roof of a large barn had already collapsed, fire officials said.

Firefighters from Freeport, Pownal, Lisbon, Brunswick, Yarmouth and Falmouth responded to the scene and the Auburn Fire Department filled in at the Durham Fire Station.

The 40- by 40-foot, two-story post-and-beam barn was destroyed and the nearby home was damaged. St. Michel estimated loss to the barn and contents and the house and some contents, and a car, “conservatively” in excess of $150,000. The property, owned by Richard Lauck, is insured, St. Michel said.
