LITCHFIELD — One team is exploring a new conference and facing foreign opponents in every game.
The other is hoping to — in the near future — recapture the swagger that made it one of the dominant Class C programs of the past decade.
Both began play Wednesday searching for their first win of the young season.
Oak Hill, playing for the first time in the Mountain Valley Conference, found it. The Raiders scored their first three goals of the season at Carrie Ricker School on Wednesday, upending Telstar 3-0.
“We are very young, starting seven freshmen or sophomores,” Oak Hill coach Brittany Chadbourne said. “We’re young, but we’re getting there.”
Five or six years ago, a victory over Telstar was a rarity, whether in the regular season or in the playoffs. Hit hard by graduation losses the past two seasons, the Rebels are essentially starting from scratch.
“We have some players with good stick skills. They can move the ball,” Telstar coach Gail Wight said. “But we’re missing the simple stuff, the feet calls, taking a free hit and putting it too high, being on the wrong side to play the ball.”
Oak Hill started the season with a pair of 3-0 setbacks, one each to Lisbon and Spruce Mountain.
Sadie Goulet netted the Raiders’ first goal of the season with 13:41 to play in the first half when she emerged from a scrum on the goal line with control of the ball and poked it past Telstar keeper Hali Barter.
Oak Hill only surrendered two shots in the opening half, both turned deftly aside by keeper Abby Fuller.
“We’ve had some games where we didn’t even get it over the 25,” Wight said. “Today we had a few chances, got a few corners, and at the end of the game, we started to play better.”
Better wasn’t good enough to beat the Raiders through the midfield, where they clamped down in the second half.
“Our midfield is very strong. There are three sophomores there who all started as freshmen so they’ve all played together,” Chadbourne said. “Brooke (Surette), our center back, does a great job. She’s in position all the time.”
Fuller and Megan Labbe shared goaltending duties in the second half, and didn’t face a shot the rest of the way.
On the other end, Courtney Roy converted a rebound on a shot from Kylee Veilleux with 20:42 to play to double the lead, and Hayley Marshall fired a laser of a shot from the top of the circle with 7:42 remaining to ice the game.
“Even though it was the other team, it’s nice to see shots like that. You don’t see those very often,” Wight said. “Most girls don’t shoot from that far out. But that was a rocket.”
Telstar started to get some pressure through to the Oak Hill back line later in the game, but couldn’t get through to the keeper.
