LEWISTON — Winter snowplowing will rely on a storm-by-storm parking ban, councilors agreed Tuesday.

City councilors voted 7-0 to remove a winter-long parking ban, opting to let downtown residents park cars in front of their buildings when the weather is clear.

Cars left on the streets and blocking city plows during winter storms could be ticketed and towed under the new rules.

The city banned overnight parking downtown from Dec. 1 through the end of March under the old rules, requiring downtown residents to find an alternative place to keep their cars overnight.

The new rules let tow truck drivers use their lots to store towed cars. Residents who have their cars towed would need to go to the police station to find out where their cars were taken.

Portland and Auburn have similar emergency parking ban policies. In Auburn, the tow trucks take them to their lots.

In Portland, cars towed to make way for snowplows are taken to a central, city-controlled lot.
