OXFORD — Beverly Yates, a retired language arts teacher at Oxford Hills Middle School, received the Mary Lou Burns Educational Service Award from the school district.

The veteran teacher, who has returned this year to volunteer in the schools, was recognized by the Oxford Hills School District Board of Directors on Tuesday evening.

The award, now in its 13th year, goes to a teacher, staff member or community member for years of service and exemplary work, and for being a lifelong learner. It was established in 2000 to honor Burns, of Paris, who retired in 1999 after 41 years with SAD 17 as a teacher, principal and personnel director.

Yates, who was also named staff member of the month in 2009, is known by colleagues for her humble demeanor, patience, tenacity and being a positive role model.
