AUBURN —  The Central Maine Community College men’s soccer squad managed a goal in each half Thursday and came away with a 2-0 victory over Unity in a collegiate matchup. 

George Clement and Spencer Osgood each netted a goal for the Mustangs (1-0), while Sam Hobson made 15 saves in the cage.

Brendan Wallace turned aside 12 shots for Unity in a solid effort.

Gordon 4, USM 3

WENHAM, Mass. –   Karli Balmer capped of her hat trick with the game-winning goal in overtime to lead Gordon College to a 4-3 win over the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference field hockey game Thursday.

Balmer was the engine for the Fighting Scots (1-2) as they overcame a 3-1 deficit to secure their first win of the season.  Trailing USM 2-0 at the half, Balmer scored Gordon’s first goal of the game in the 41st minute on a penalty stroke. The Huskies (2-1) answered in the 46th minute as freshman Michaela George scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season following an assist from junior Rebecca Pratt for a 3-1 lead.

The Scots again pulled to within one goal in the 62nd minute as senior Melinda Fowler rocketed in her first goal of the season.  But with no time remaining in regulation, Balmer converted an assist on a penalty corner from sophomore Gayle Watson on the Fighting Scots final play to force overtime.

In the overtime period, Balmer took just three minutes to seal the Huskies’ fate and snag the win for Gordon converting her second penalty stroke of the contest for the game-winner.

Junior Ariel Kaplan  and senior captain Rachel Trafton  scored the Huskies’ first two goals of the game.USM sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Fortin made 12 saves in the loss.  Anna Bury made 12 saves for Gordon.
