DEAR SUN SPOTS: On April 19 I wrote to you about a beautiful baseball field here at the Veterans Home in South Paris. The rumor I shared with you then is that the field cannot be used because a nearby homeowner has threatened to sue those responsible if they allow games there.

I am still curious about that and a lot of things. Why was the field built in the first place? Why aren’t games played there?

If anyone knows any of the answers, I would be glad to find out about them, even though it may be only to satisfy my curiosity.

I know I and many of the veterans would be very happy if they could watch a Little League game on a warm summer evening.

So if anyone has any of these answers, please write to Sun Spots and let us know why we are deprived of watching a game and the kids are denied having a lot of fun. — James Denholm, South Paris

DEAR SUN SPOTS: In the late 1960s to early ’70s Grimmel’s riding stable was on Ferry Road in Lewiston. I was there once and wish I had gone more times.

I’d like to know when it first opened and when it closed for good. For horse lovers the stable was a place to ride or just hang out. Thank you. — C.G., Lewiston

ANSWER: Sun Spots doesn’t have any information, but hopefully other readers will be able to help.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: In the summer is it more efficient to leave the furnace on all the time or turn it on every time you do the dishes or take a shower? I have heard both arguments, but would like to hear it from the experts. Thank you. — Fern Asselin

ANSWER: You have heard both arguments because both can be correct — depending on the individual boiler system and circumstances.

Do you heat your boiler with oil, natural gas, wood or coal or something else? How often do you use hot water? At what temperature do you have your boiler set?

Turning something off almost always uses less energy, but almost always is not always and it can be inconvenient to have to wait for hot water.

Sun Spots suggests you call the company that maintains your heating system for you and ask them what they think. They will know what kind of system you have and can give you an informed answer.
