Wood carvers, bean supper

SUMNER — Pastor Howard MacMullen invites the public to join the Congregational Church of East Sumner in the 2nd annual Camp and Carve Weekend. The Streaked Mountain Wood Carvers will camp out in the church yard and display and work on their hand-carved items. The event began Sept. 7 and will continue Saturday, Sept. 8. Many of the items are for sale.

On Saturday evening, the church will hold a traditional beanhole beans supper with hot dogs, brown bread, cole slaw and apple crisp. The cost is $7 per person with a family maximum of $20. One of the raffle items will be a wooden hymnal with a rustic church which resembles the Congregational Church, carved by Bob Perry, to offset the cost of the new hymnals.

New members will be taken in on Sept. 16 during the morning worship.

Worship is from 9 to 10 a.m. followed by refreshments and a sermon discussion. Sunday School is the same time.

National Cmdr. visits Legion

LIVERMORE — American Legion State Commander Ken Bouchard of George Bunten Post 10, Livermore Falls, has announced that the National Commander, James Koutz of Indiana, will make his official visit to the state on Sept. 8 and 9.

Koutz was scheduled to arrive in Portland on Sept. 7. On Saturday, Sept. 8, he will visit and have breakfast at the George Bunten Post 10. He will then travel to the Napoleon Ouellette Post 24, Rumford.

Koutz will then proceed to the Jackson-Silver Post 68, Greenwood (Locke Mills) for lunch and visiting. Later in the afternoon, he will visit the Foster-Carroll Post 72 in Paris.

Saturday evening, a banquet in his honor will be held at the Mechanic Falls-Minot-Poland Post 150, Mechanic Falls. Koutz will depart the area on Sunday to make another visit in another department.

All veterans in the area of his visits are welcome to attend the events, whether they are members of the American Legion or not.

Hacker’s Hill hawk watch

CASCO — Join Loon Echo Land Trust from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, for a migratory hawk watch on Hacker’s Hill. This field day will be lead by expert birder Dick Anderson, former executive director of Maine Audubon Society.

At the fall hawk watch last September more than 150 birds were sighted, including broad-winged hawks, cooper’s hawk, sharp-shinned hawks, red-tailed hawks, northern harriers, bald eagles and osprey. There will be mounted hawks on hand.

In this region this time of year, peak hours for spotting migrating hawks and eagles occur between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Experts will be on hand from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for assistance and questions. No registration is required. The only equipment needed are binoculars, a comfortable chair, water and a snack.

Rain date will be Sunday, Sept. 9.

Hacker’s Hill is off of Quaker Ridge Road in Casco. A steep, paved road leads to the top of the hill where parking is available.

Arts, Science Festival Sept. 9

BRUNSWICK — Cornerstones of Science has partnered with the Five Rivers Arts Alliance to offer the Family Arts & Science Festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, on the Mall.

Maine Starlight Festival is also ongoing statewide. It began Sept. 7 and will continue through Sept. 16. Events are happening at planetariums and observatories throughout the state, and telescopes are available for check-out at 20 partner libraries.

Girl Scout info nights

MINOT — Girl Scouts of Maine will host parent information and registration meetings at the following locations:

Monday, Sept. 10, at 6:15 p.m. at the Minot Consolidated School gym.

Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m. at the Elm Street School, Mechanic Falls.

Thursday, Sept. 25, at 6 p.m. at the Ricker Memorial Library, Poland.

Girls and adults are invited to attend the meeting to find how Girl Scout programs and activities inspire them to reach their personal best. Participants will also learn about the flexible options and benefits of becoming a Girl Scout volunteer.

Energy Council candidates debate

PORTLAND — The Environmental and Energy Technology Council of Maine (E2Tech) will be holding a U.S. Senate Candidates debate on Thursday, Sept. 13 at Hannaford Hall, Abromson Center, University of Southern Maine.

Networking begins at 7:15 a.m. and the debate at 8 a.m. Questions will focus on the candidates’ views on environmental, energy and technology policies and their plans for stimulating economic development in Maine and the United States.

E2Tech is also celebrating its 10th anniversary with a celebratory dinner on Sept. 20. For more information visit www.e2tech.org.

Cemetery group annual meeting

HARTFORD — The Maple Grove Cemetery Association will hold its annual meeting at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at the Union Schoolhouse, Church Street.

Persons with interest in buying lots should attend.
