TURNER — Music for Mavis Community Gazebo Series will present blues performer Mary Murphy at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 11, at the gazebo, Route 117.

Murphy sings a variety of styles,  always a blusey flavor: songs of Etta James, Patsy Cline, Billie Holliday find their way into her performances. With a little prompting, she can always be convinced to sing a French song or two.

Mary Murphy began playing instruments and singing at 3 or 4 years of age without the benefit of lessons.

She began writing, performing and recording jingles at E.A.B. studio, in Lewiston,  immediately after high school, and wrote many jingles, including some award-winners.

During her early career, she performed as a folksinger throughout New England, playing guitar as accompaniment. She attended college later in life, graduating with  with an associate of science degree from University of Maine at Augusta with a concentration in sociology and music. She has worked as a music teacher, a tutor, among other occupations.

Mary joined the Down East Country Music Association in 2007. Over the years she has won many music awards from DECMA in Maine, and  the North America Country Music Associations International in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. This year she was awarded 2012 senior female traditional country vocalist of the year and solo artist of the year.

The show is free of charge, but donations are welcome. The show will begin at 6 p.m. due to seasonal changes. The audience is encouraged to bring dinner and a chair.
