LEWISTON — John Ford, retired game warden of Waldo County, will be the presenter at USM’s Lewiston/Auburn Senior College “Food for Thought” 11:30 a.m. luncheon on Friday, Sept. 14.

Ford, the author of “Suddenly, The Cider Didn’t Taste So Good,” will tell about his 20 years of adventures as a game warden in Maine. The book, newly released in April, is already in its third printing. The author is a gifted storyteller and humorist and has gathered a following in his presentations.

Ford’s love of wildlife had him rescuing many injured animals over the years and bringing them home while his patient and tolerant wife, Judy, allowed them to be nursed back to health in their home in Brooks, in Waldo County.

Following his retirement as a game warden, he was elected sheriff of Waldo County in 1990 and again in 1994, serving a total of eight years. He was honored by his peers in 2000 as Maine’s Legendary Game Warden at their annual banquet.

Ford and his long-time friend, retired State Trooper Mark E. Nickerson, wrote a bi-weekly column alternating with each other for the Republican Journal and later The Village Soup in Belfast about events, some humorous and some downright scary. These were actual incidents while on patrol in their area.

The author is currently writing a column for a national monthly magazine, Northwood’s Sporting Journal, covering similar topics.

The cost, which includes lunch, is $7 with advance reservation or $8 at the door. Reservations must be made by noon on Sept. 13 by calling 753-6510.
