The newly created L/A Film Forum, a partnership between the Lewiston/Auburn Film Festival and the Auburn and Lewiston Public Libraries, invites the public to participate in a new contemporary independent film discussion series. The opening movie, Adam’s Apples, will be shown at Auburn Public Library on Thursday, Sept 13 at 6:00 p.m with other films to follow each month.

Adam’s Apples is a 2005 Danish comedy-drama film revolving around the Book of Job. Adam, the former leader of a neo-Nazi gang, is required to spend several months living in a small religious community headed by a priest named Ivan. Ivan, who believes firmly in the goodness of man, tells Adam he must complete a goal of his choice to leave the parish. Adam chooses the goal of baking an apple pie. Ivan accepts the goal with the condition that it must be made from apples from the tree that grows in the churchyard. However, as viewers will discover life isn’t always as easy as apple pie.

The scholar/facilitator for the discussion will be Dr. Darby Ray, Director of the Harward Center for Community Partnerships at Bates College. Before coming to Bates, Darby was a Professor of Religious Studies at Millsaps College in Mississippi where she also directed their 1 Campus 1 Community Initiative.

Each L/A Film Forum event will include a film showing followed by a facilitated discussion based on the ideas, themes, or concepts presented by the movie. These discussions will foster interaction among area residents on relevant issues in their daily lives. All Film Forum events are free and open to adults. Light refreshments will be served at each film.

The next L/A Film Forum event will take place on Thursday October 4th at 6 pm at Lewiston Public Library with the showing of Scotland, PA. The series will continue on the first Thursday of each month through May 2013.

The L/A Film Forum was made possible by a grant from the Maine Humanities Council. Local co-sponsors of the series include the Lewiston Auburn Film Festival and the Auburn and Lewiston public libraries. For more information on the series, contact the LPL Adult Services Desk at 513-3135 or LPLReference@LewistonMaine.gov or the Auburn Public Library Reference Desk at 333-6640 Ext. 4.
