It was extremely refreshing to read Lewiston Police Chief Michael Bussiere’s letter (Sept. 4) regarding the importance of education, not only from an ideological point of view, but from a valid economic point of view.

Society today is challenged in so many ways, with evolving definitions of the traditional family to financial stress and much more, that children are being left by the wayside as government officials make “easy” financial cuts to balance the budget without being cognizant of the impact those decisions have on the future. It is much easier to make cuts than it is to look at the big picture and invest in the country’s future.

Bussiere is a man of vision. His comments cut to the core of our sociological challenges. An educated populace will bring the nation back to where it needs to be, and the foresight and wisdom to commit to a solid educational foundation for the future will solidify the USA’s position as a world leader.
