100 years ago, 1912
Although they failed to carry the county and few of them really expected that this was possible this year, Androscoggin Republicans are much encouraged over Monday’s vote and they declare that just as sure as the sun rises in the east, Androscoggin will redeem herself when election day comes around again in two years and the Republicans will once more have possession of the county. The Republicans carried a majority of the towns in the county and greatly reduced the usual majority in Lewiston. This year the Democratic majority in Lewiston was 1,201, or a reduction of 804 from two years ago.

50 years ago, 1962
A Lewiston woman got a shocking surprise last evening when she opened her front door and found a lighted street flare on the porch. Mrs. Armand Poulin of 121 Webster St., reported to police that she heard running footsteps on her porch and then heard a car take off from in front of her house. She checked and found the “bowling ball” type flare on the porch. Police believe the prank was the work of young people.

25 years ago, 1987
Though an independent consultant has suggested that Auburn may have to reassess property citywide, Lewiston officials say they are keeping pace with a state-mandated revaluation program. “We’re not having any problems,” Lewiston Chief Assessor Fernand Rodrigue said, “We went through our last valuation in 1980, and we’ve been working on the current program for close to a year now. Rather than contracting with an outside assessor, the city of Lewiston uses its own employees to value more than 11,000 properties, plus 1,500 personal property accounts.
