A neighbor, seeing a form move about in Mrs. M. Decker’s garden at 391 Main street, Lewiston, about midnight, telephoned the police that “men or boys” were stealing the fruit and for the officers to hurry to the scene. Hunting about in the garden, the officers came upon a woman, about 70 years old, crouching under raspberry bushes. In her pockets were various small fruit and by her side was a basket, filled with things which Mrs. Decker had raised in the garden. Mrs. Decker was aroused by the commotion, and to her surprise she beheld one of her neighbors whom she knew, and she asked that the woman be released. It is said that the woman has a garden of her own and has money in the bank.

The Androscoggin County Commission today got the sad news that the present excavation to alleviate flooding in the basement of the county building may cost in the vicinity of $3,500. “This is one of those things that we couldn’t anticipate,” said Commr. Louis P. Gagne. At the same time Gagne took another swipe at the county’s line budget system pointing out that the county is a “guinea pig” and he declared, “we can’t provide money for things like this.”

Seventeen volunteers in the Twin Cities accepted nearly $23,000 in pledges over the Labor Day weekend to help Jerry’s kids in the fight against muscular dystrophy. The Muscular Dystrophy Association’s annual telethon, starring comedian Jerry Lewis, raised more than $39 million for medical research. Roughly 1,250 donors in the Lewiston-Auburn and Brunswick-Topsham areas pledged a total of $22,921 toward the effort. Richard Desjardins, local MDA coordinator, said, “The average pledge was $20 and we got seven or eight for $100. One person donated $1,000, and that really got us fired up.” Last year pledges in the L-A area amounted to about $9,000. Volunteers manned a telephone bank at ERA McCann Realty at 239 Main St., Lewiston.
