FARMINGTON — SAVES, the Franklin County office of Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services, is holding an open training for all those interested in becoming Rape Crisis Helpline advocates in the Franklin county area. Classes will run from Oct. 3 to Nov. 28 and will include a series of weekly Wednesday evening sessions, as well as two Saturday classes. The training is free to any person volunteering their time to the helpline.
SAVES advocates come from many walks of life. Students, professionals, all genders and anyone over the age of 18 are welcome to attend the training. The only qualifications are that the advocates have a compassionate heart, an open mind, a willingness to learn and a desire to have the chance to make a difference in the lives of people affected by sexual assault, childhood sexual abuse, sexual exploitation, stalking and sexual harassment.
The training gives all advocates specialized training in crisis intervention skills, legal and medical response and numerous other issues pertaining to sexual violence. It also provides participants with skills that can improve their own lives and relationships. Advocates have the opportunity to collect a small stipend for covering evening, weekend and holiday shifts. UMF students of certain majors may be able to receive credit for their training and advocacy work.
For further information or an application for the program, contact SAVES by phone at 778-9522 between the hours of 9-5, Monday through Friday, by email at [email protected] or at the office at 227 Main St., Holman House second floor, Farmington.
