AUBURN — He is a champion boxer, an acclaimed writer, and an ordained Buddhist monk. He has been described in literary circles as a “boxing Buddha.” Keynote speaker Jaed Coffin, the author of “A Chant to Soothe Wild Elephants,” will be speaking at 6 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21, at the Auburn Public Library as part of the Fall into a Good Book event to celebrate readers and aspiring writers.
Coffin’s memoir, “A Chant to Soothe Wild Elephants,” chronicles his experience as a Buddhist monk in his mother’s native village in Thailand. His forthcoming book, “Roughhouse Friday,” is about the year he fought as the middleweight champion of a barroom boxing show in Juneau, Alaska. In addition, he has had several articles published in Down East magazine including the “Year of the Yurt.”
Coffin, who currently lives in Portland, will offer advice on how to write your own memoir as well as discuss the pros and cons of writing from experience. He has spoken widely at universities and colleges where his book is taught as a common text in multicultural curriculum initiatives.
