BRUNSWICK, Maine (AP) — Firefighters from across Maine have dedicated a memorial to first responders who died during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Firefighters from 20 departments, honor guards and the Maine Department of Public Safety bagpipe and drum corps kicked off the event Saturday at Southern Maine Community College’s Maine Fire Service Institute at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station.

The memorial features a section of steel girder recovered from the World Trade Center site.

SMCC President Ron Cantor said such memorials “ensure that new generations of Americans never forget.”

The Maine Fire Service Institute is part of SMCC and carries the statewide responsibility for firefighter training and the legislative authority to issue certification.
