FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington will present a concert dedicated to the music and creative legacy of American composer John Cage, considered one of the most influential and controversial artists of the 20th century. 

Performing will be Grammy Award-winning pianist Paul Sullivan; internationally recognized percussionist Gustavo Aguilar and the UMF Experimental Arts Ensemble; and the experimental music collective Les Trois Etoiles.

Part of the “A Tribute to John Cage” concert series, the performance will feature a broad range of the composer’s work spanning 50 years.

The concert, part of an international celebration of the centennial of the birth of Cage, will be at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21, at Emery Community Arts Center on the UMF campus. Admission is free.

Earlier in the day, Liz Phillips, Phil Carlsen, Nate Aldrich, who work in music, sound and movement, will discuss Cage’s pioneering sounds and ideas. This session will be from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., also at the Emery center.
