CUMBERLAND — Comedian Bob Marley, the Don Campbell Band, Tony Boffa and other performers will entertain at this year’s  Cumberland County Fair, running Sunday through Saturday, Sept. 23-29.

This year, parking is free at the event held at the Cumberland Fairgrounds on Blanchard Road.

Opening day features music from the Don Campbell Band at noon on the main stage in front of the exhibition hall, as well as the Colby College Woodman’s Team in the museum area at 2:30 p.m. Comedian Bob Marley will perform at 6:30 p.m. in front of the grandstand.

Monday, Sept. 24, Maine Agriculture Day, features the Bob Charest Band at 6 p.m. on the main stage, as well as an amusement ride promotion ($15 for all rides). That promotion will also run on Wednesday and Thursday.

Tuesday and Thursday are senior citizens days, with people 65 and older admitted  for $3. Tuesday also features Taylor’s Grove at the entertainment building at 1 p.m., St. Savieous & Friends performing Southern gospel on the main stage at 3 p.m. and Tony Boffa performing on that stage at 7 p.m.

The Don Campbell Band will be back at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, on the main stage. Prior to that, a demoliton derby will be held at the infield of the racetrack at 7 p.m.

On Thursday, Sept. 27, the Downeast Brass Band will perform at 3 p.m. on the main stage; Bobby Reed will be on that stage at 6:30 p.m. The fourth annual Classic Car Show will be at 6 p.m. on the race track; lawnmower racing will be at 6:30 p.m. in front of the grandstand; and the Hyssongs gospel group will perform at 4 and 7 p.m. at the entertainment building.

Maine Maple Day will be celebrated on Friday, Sept. 28. Debbie Meyers will perform at 5 p.m. on the main stage and there will be an international horse pull — the U.S. versus Canada — at 7 p.m. at the pulling arena. 

On Saturday, Sept. 29, Brian Wardwell will entertain at 1 p.m. and the Northern Groove Band will play at 3:30 p.m., both on the main stage. The NPPA Truck Pull will take place at 6:30 p.m. in front of the grandstand and the World of Horses Show will be at 7 p.m. in the pulling arena.

As usual, food and animals are traditional attractions. “I’ve tried to reinforce to all the superintendents to make sure to do the best we can to have the barns full of animals, from the 4-H end to the oxen and horses,” Mike Timmons, fair president, said last week.
