A State shoot is a most interesting affair in itself but with all the men engaged in it encamped on the Maine State Rifle Range in Auburn during the four days Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of next week, it should be doubly interesting. It will be noteworthy that this is the first time that an encampment shoot has ever been held here. Preparatory practice has been taking place here during the summer. Sergt. Montello Bradbury, who is caretaker of the range throughout the year, is especially busy. All the mounds and targets have to be put in perfect conditions.
50 years ago, 1962
A spokesman for the Wilfred Goodman Co., Auburn, today disclosed the apparent reason for the fire which destroyed the wood frame wiping cloth establishment last month, laying the blame to children. Mrs. Goodman, operator of the business, said, “Workmen who were dismantling the plant today found a rock in the vent pipe from the dryer where the fire started. The fan in the blower system was broken by the rock and heat built up in the dryer when it did not have any way to escape.”

(PHOTO CAPTION) Lewiston City employee Jerry Scanlon uses a sledge hammer to ring the large bell on top of the City Building Thursday to join in a nationwide celebration of the bicentennial of the signing of the Constitution of the United States. It was the first time the bell has been rung since 1978.
