BROWNFIELD — Singer-songwriters and guitarists

and

share more than a common surname. Both cut their teeth fronting popular groups in the 1990s before launching successful solo careers.

The two folk/rock musicians will perform Sunday, Sept. 30, at Stone Mountain Arts Center.

Glen led Toad The Wet Sprocket, whose hits include “All I Want” and “Something’s Always Wrong.” Grant-Lee fronted the group Grant Lee Buffalo, best known for songs “Mockingbirds” and “Truly, Truly.”

Whether recording for independents or majors, or releasing albums on their own homegrown labels, Glen, who is 42, and Grant-Lee, 49, have long maintained a highly regarded presence and a loyal following.

Grant-Lee and Glen, who are unrelated, became friends when both were performing residencies at Largo in Los Angeles about 10 years ago. “At Largo, the room was always full of musicians, songwriters, comedians, actors. Playing there, you’d often find yourself on-stage, playing alongside people you’d admired from afar. Glen was one of those. Some of my longest friendships were forged there,” Grant-Lee said in a prepared release.

Firmly planted as solo artists, the front men of Grant Lee Buffalo and Toad The Wet Sprocket have also enjoyed the sporadic reformation of their former bands in recent times. “I’ve been a fan of Grant-Lee’s for a long while now and love being on the road with him,”  Glen said.

The acoustic co-headliner tour features the two trading tales and songs from their collective repertoires. It coincides with the October release of Grant-Lee’s  album, “Walking In The Green Corn.” Glen recently finished “The Coyote Sessions,” a limited-release album of rarities recorded live to a single microphone. He is working on a new Toad the Wet Sprocket album for release in 2013.

Tickets to the 8 p.m. concert are $35, plus $3 handling fee. Stone Mountain Arts Center is at 695 Dug Way Road. For more information, call 935-7292 or visit www.carolnoonanmusic.com/ArtsCenter/index.html.
